Last week, AB Bernstein and research analysts Toni Sacconaghi appeared on CNBC with a guest. Because of his assertion that Google intends to pay Apple to be the default search engine on its devices, Sacconaghi was present.

Furthermore, Toni Sacconaghi added that, based on studies conducted by his business, Google will have spent $10 to $12 billion on this project by 2020. Google has a budget of over $15 billion. This number exceeds our expectations, despite the fact that we are aware that Google pays a significant sum to be the default search engine on Apple products.

Sacconaghi, meanwhile, forecasted that Google would provide Apple $15 billion in 2021 and $18–20 billion in 2022. But if the predicted outcomes pan out as expected, Sacconaghi thinks Google would lose its position as Apple’s default search engine in 2022. Maybe later, taking into account the costs and market dangers.

The phrase “default search engine” alludes to the fact that Safari’s search or URL bars will automatically turn questions into Google searches. Siri also conducts speech and text searches. A representative for Apple countered by saying that you could instruct Siri to utilise Bing or DuckDuckGo for searches. However, searches indicate that Apple users do not frequently alter their default search engine.

Additionally, 90% of Apple devices prefer to utilise the built-in Safari browser, according to yearly studies. Overall, Apple and Android have lower market shares for mobile devices. Safari accounts for 53% of all mobile web browser usage, though, thanks to Apple phone and tablet users.

As a result, the Apple and Google settlement raised antitrust issues in the US. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is focusing on its current case, which is the transaction from 2020. Google currently claims that regulating default search engine agreements will generally result in poor-quality search results. Additionally, it can cause device prices to increase.

Apple’s Safari browser now has one billion users which accounts for 20% of the people on the internet. Atlas VPN conducted a survey to find out the most used browsers around the world, and found Google Chrome to be number one and Safari to be the second most used.

The number used for the survey was taken from GlobalStates and InternetWorldStats, which uanimously concluded that Google Chrome had 3.3 billion worldwide users and takes up 64% of the total browser market. Microsoft Edge, Firefox and Samsung Internet follow Safari closely behind.

Atlas VPN believes the popularity of the browsers is due to wide availability and security features, however, for Chrome, users were attracted by its “application drive design”. Since Google owns a lot of popular apps like YouTube, users eventually do try out other services of Google.

Safari’s success is attributed to its availability on iPhones and Macs, and its security features especially its Intelligent Track Prevention feature, which stops bad actors from tracking people across all websites. Microsoft Edge and Samsung Internet are similar to Safari, except the added security features. Their popularity and usage grew only when it was set as the default browser in their respective devices, compeeling users to adopt it.

Firefox has security extensions that protect people from malware, along with its Secure Shell network protocol ensuring safe communications between devices.

When Microsoft Edge was introduced as the new default browser for Windows in 2015, it had a difficult challenge ahead of it. Edge needs to make any kind of impact in Google Chrome’s dominance.

Although Chrome remains the most popular desktop web browser, Microsoft Edge appears to have overtaken Chrome as the second most popular.

This is a significant victory for Microsoft, but it is only the beginning of a long journey. It’s worth recalling that Microsoft formerly dominated the browser market with Internet Explorer for decades. Allowing that browser to stagnate, on the other hand, meant that Windows 10 needed a new browser.

Edge was born, although he had several developmental problems early on, including poor performance and blurry vision. While the vision isn’t great — Microsoft is still dumping everything but the kitchen sink at Edge – it’s a capable browser these days.

Edge has now surpassed Apple’s Safari as the second most used desktop browser, according to Statcounter. Edge took 9.65 percent of the market share in March 2022, up 0.05 percent.

Safari fell to third place with 9.56 percent, a -0.21 percent loss. Of course, the race is still close enough that Safari could reclaim second place in the coming months. However, there is certainly a longer-term shift on the way, with Edge expanding beyond Safari.

By the way, while Microsoft Edge may eat into Google Chrome’s market share, don’t expect it to overtake Chrome anytime soon. Chrome grabbed 67.29% of the market in March:

67.29 percent use Google Chrome
9.65 percent of people use Microsoft Edge.
9.56 percent of people use Apple Safari.
7.57 percent use Mozilla Firefox
2.81 percent of the total

So, what happens if desktop and mobile users are combined? Given Apple’s position with the iPhone, the situation does change in Safari’s advantage. Despite this, Edge is the third most popular browser on both mobile and desktop, thanks to its cross-platform availability:

Google Chrome has a 64.53 percent (+1.75) market share.
Apple Safari has an 18.84 percent market share (-0.46)
Microsoft Edge has a 4.05 percent market share (-0.01)
Mozilla Firefox has a 3.4 percent market share (-0.81)
2.82 percent (+0.05) for Samsung Internet
