According to WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned leading messaging platform WhatsApp is presently testing a much higher 2GB file transfer limit between users.WhatsApp’s file-sharing features have recently become very popular, and users have been able to send media files, such as photographs, videos, documents, and links, within conversations since 2017.
However, the 100MB file size limit has kept fixed over time, which is beginning to annoy those who want to exchange files that are considerably larger than the existing limit.
Two photos posted by WABetaInfo suggest that the Meta-owned service has been testing a new 2GB file size limit for some users in Argentina for the past few days.
The platform should be much more conducive to sharing video clips and other large media files now that the limit has been raised to 2GB, all of which would be safely transmitted via WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
It’s unclear whether this is a one-off localised test or the start of a wide – ranging switchover, but WhatsApp frequently conducts trials of new features in development in this manner, so there’s a good chance it will become a feature available to all WhatsApp users at some point in the future.
According to recent reports, WhatsApp will soon introduce a ‘poll function’ in group chats as well as the option to respond to individual messages.
