Over the past decade, Pakistan’s freelance economy has been widely celebrated as a success story, an accessible pathway for young professionals to earn globally without leaving their homes. However, by early 2026, signs of structural stress have become increasingly visible.

Freelancers across major platforms are reporting declining orders, reduced earnings, and growing uncertainty. While anecdotal at first, emerging patterns suggest a broader transformation underway one driven by technological disruption, shifting global demand, and local systemic challenges.

From Rapid Growth to Structural Fragility

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital adoption worldwide, and Pakistan benefited significantly from this shift.

The country was ranked among the fastest-growing freelance markets globally.

Freelancers contributed hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign exchange annually.

Platforms like Fiverr and Upwork became central to this growth.

Despite this success, much of the freelance activity was concentrated in low-complexity services such as basic graphic design, data entry, and entry-level content writing. These categories, while accessible, are inherently vulnerable to automation.

AI as a Structural Disruptor

The introduction of generative AI tools particularly ChatGPT has significantly altered the economics of freelance work.

Recent research indicates a measurable decline in demand for tasks that are easily automated, including writing, basic coding, and repetitive digital services.

A separate multi-institutional study reported an approximate 21% decline in demand for automation-prone freelance jobs following the introduction of generative AI tools.

This shift reflects a broader trend: businesses are increasingly able to generate content, code, and design outputs internally using AI, reducing reliance on external freelancers for routine work.

Market Confidence and Infrastructure Constraints

Beyond technological disruption, infrastructure reliability has also influenced market behavior.

Industry bodies such as Pakistan Software Houses Association have highlighted concerns around:

Internet reliability

Policy unpredictability

Communication disruptions

In global outsourcing markets, reliability is critical. Even minor inconsistencies can prompt clients to shift work to more stable regions.

Platform Dynamics and Increasing Competition

Freelance platforms have also evolved under increasing global competition.

On platforms like Upwork:

Competition has intensified due to oversupply

Paid bidding systems have increased the cost of acquiring work

This has made entry and sustainability more difficult, particularly for new or mid-level freelancers.

The Emergence of Low-Value Digital Labor

Another shift is the growing role of freelancers in AI training ecosystems.

Companies such as Scale AI rely on distributed workers for data labeling and model evaluation tasks. While these opportunities provide income, they are typically low-paying and task-based, offering limited long-term growth.

This reflects a transition from independent freelancing toward commoditized digital labor.

Skill Mismatch and Educational Gaps

A structural issue underlying these changes is the mismatch between current skill development and evolving market demand.

Many training programs still emphasize outdated freelance skills, while global demand is shifting toward:

AI integration

Automation systems

Advanced digital problem-solving

Without adaptation, this gap may continue to widen.

The Shift from Tasks to Systems

The freelance economy is transitioning from a task-based model to a systems-based model.

Traditional freelancers typically sell time and complete tasks manually.
Modern AI-enabled professionals, by contrast, design systems that automate workflows and deliver scalable outcomes.

This shift fundamentally changes how value is created and priced in the digital economy.

Opportunities in the New Landscape

Despite current challenges, new opportunities are emerging in areas such as:

AI automation and workflow design

Prompt engineering

AI-assisted development

Business process optimization

Professionals who adapt to these areas are better positioned to remain competitive.

Policy and Ecosystem Considerations

To sustain growth in the Pakistan’s freelance economy, structural improvements are needed:

Updated and industry-relevant curricula

Investment in applied AI education

Reliable internet infrastructure

Alignment between policy and global technological trends

Conclusion

Pakistan’s freelance economy is not disappearing, it is evolving.

The current slowdown reflects a deeper structural transformation driven by automation, shifting demand, and systemic inefficiencies.

For individuals and institutions alike, the path forward depends on adaptation. The divide is no longer between freelancers and clients, but between those who can effectively leverage AI and those who cannot.

Pakistan has officially entered the AI-powered governance era with the launch of its first-ever government-backed AI avatar, “Laila,” unveiled by the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication at a high-profile technology event.

The announcement, made in the presence of senior government officials and industry leaders, signals Pakistan’s growing ambition to position itself as an emerging AI-driven nation by embedding artificial intelligence across governance, public services, and innovation ecosystems.

Federal Minister for IT & Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja described the AI avatar as more than a symbolic milestone, calling it a practical step toward integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. According to the ministry, Laila will be used in educational programs, citizen engagement platforms, and digital public services.

The launch aligns with Pakistan’s National AI Roadmap, which outlines ambitious targets including training 1 million AI professionals by 2030, funding 1,000 AI startups, supporting 400 university-led AI projects annually, and developing 50 sector-specific AI models tailored to local challenges.

Designed as an interactive digital interface, Laila is expected to assist users through multilingual support, improve accessibility to digital services, and help bridge the digital divide by making AI-driven platforms more intuitive for the public.

Tech industry experts have welcomed the move, calling it a strategic shift from policy planning to real-world AI implementation.

“This initiative shows how AI policy can translate into public-facing impact. It’s a step toward building a future-ready digital Pakistan,” an industry analyst noted.

With this launch, Pakistan joins a growing list of countries experimenting with AI avatars to modernize government communication and citizen services—marking a notable moment in the country’s digital transformation journey.

Experts at a seminar in Islamabad have projected that Pakistan’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy 2025 could increase the country’s GDP by 7–12% and create up to one million new jobs by 2030, if executed effectively.

The seminar, titled “Bridging Gaps in Pakistan’s AI Roadmap: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward,” was organized by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE). Policymakers, tech leaders, and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss how AI could reshape Pakistan’s economy.

Dr. Anil Salman, Chair of the Government’s AI Policy Committee, highlighted that the policy focuses on building an ethical, inclusive, and innovation-driven AI ecosystem. He said the framework was shaped with input from UNESCO, ADB, and the Commonwealth, and aims to position Pakistan as a regional hub for AI development.

Dr. Najibullah, Member of Science and Technology at the Planning Commission, announced a Public Venture Capital Fund of Rs 2 billion to support AI startups and innovation accelerators. He stressed the potential of AI in agriculture, healthcare, and education, while noting challenges such as data infrastructure and cybersecurity.

From the private sector, Suniya Shahid, CEO of Techvention Ltd., called for AI funds for women-led startups and ethical auditing frameworks to ensure responsible use of AI tools.

Dr. Naveed Iftikhar, CEO of Atomcamp, joined virtually and emphasized the need for upskilling across industries, encouraging collaboration with global partners to strengthen digital infrastructure.

Closing the discussion, Dr. Nasir Iqbal, Associate Professor at PIDE, said the success of the AI policy should be measured by productivity, inclusivity, and competitiveness, warning that poor implementation could widen inequality.

The experts agreed that while Pakistan faces obstacles in infrastructure and funding, the Pakistan AI Policy 2025 provides a strong foundation for a tech-driven, knowledge-based economy.

The Islamabad IT Park, a flagship project under Pakistan’s Digital Pakistan Vision, is nearing completion with 71% construction progress and is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs once operational.

According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), the project is being developed through a $76.3 million concessional loan from South Korea, reflecting strong international support for Pakistan’s technology sector.

A Hub for Innovation and Growth

The 12-story facility will cover 66,893 square meters and include two basement levels. It will provide office space for around 120 start-ups and small to medium enterprises (SMEs), along with testing labs, classrooms, an industry-academia linkage center, and an auditorium.

Designed to meet international standards, the IT Park aims to strengthen Pakistan’s IT exports, promote technology transfer, and foster collaboration between academia and the private sector. The park is expected to attract global technology firms and serve as a key enabler of Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Funded by South Korea, Built for the Future

The Islamabad IT Park, along with a similar project in Karachi, is funded by South Korea as part of a bilateral effort to boost Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. Despite challenges such as heavy rains, import restrictions, and economic constraints, the project has remained within its $76.3 million budget, with an additional $12.5 million allocated under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Construction is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025. Once operational, the park will act as a center for innovation, investment, and employment, helping Pakistan’s IT industry become more competitive globally.

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority is starting a new project to solve Lahore’s traffic problems using drone technology. Ten drones will begin flying over the city in September 2025 to help manage traffic better.

These drones will have cameras that send live video to traffic wardens on their mobile phones. This will help traffic police see where traffic jams are happening and fix them quickly. It’s the first time Pakistan is using drones on such a large scale for traffic control.

“We can now watch many traffic spots at the same time and send help where it’s needed most, said an official from Punjab Safe Cities Authority.”

The drones will help traffic wardens respond faster when there are traffic problems.

The drones will first focus on Lahore’s busiest roads and intersections where traffic jams happen most often. These include major shopping areas and business districts where thousands of people get stuck in traffic every day.

Later, more drones will be added to cover other parts of the city. Officials believe this new system will help reduce the time people spend stuck in traffic and also improve air quality by reducing pollution from cars waiting in jams.

This project makes Lahore one of the first cities in South Asia to use modern drone technology for traffic management. Other Pakistani cities may also adopt this system if it works well in Lahore.

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), has invited scientists, researchers, and students to participate in the country’s historic first human spaceflight mission. The initiative allows the public to contribute by proposing space experiments for the upcoming journey to the Chinese Space Station (CSS).

Be Part of History: Submit Your Space Experiments

Suparco is calling for proposals for innovative experiments that can be conducted in space. The CSS offers a rare environment with microgravity, extreme temperatures, and vacuum conditions—ideal for groundbreaking research.

This is a golden opportunity for Pakistani minds to actively shape the country’s future in space science and technology.

The CSS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometers. It follows an elliptical path inclined at 41.5 degrees to the equator. The station completes one orbit in just 92 minutes while traveling at a speed of 7.7 km per second.

Selected experiments will be conducted using the station’s advanced facilities. These include equipment for space life sciences, biotechnology, physics, fluid dynamics, material science, and astrophysics.

Suparco encourages experiments in agriculture and medical sciences. These fields can benefit greatly from the microgravity environment, offering insights not possible on Earth.

All proposals should meet the following criteria:

Novel and scientifically unique

Lightweight and cost-effective

Feasible within a one-week timeframe in microgravity

Aligned with the CSS’s research goals

Supportive of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Launch Timeline of Spaceflight Mission

Pakistan’s first astronaut is expected to fly to the CSS by the end of 2026, following the completion of astronaut training and mission readiness. Suparco sees this mission as a major step for the country’s space program.

Successful experiments may lead to patents, scientific publications, and new commercial technologies. The results could also contribute to Pakistan’s socio-economic development.

Deadline and Submission Details

The deadline for submitting experiments is April 30, 2025.
Interested individuals and institutions can learn more and apply through the official website:

“This mission is more than a milestone in space,” Suparco said. “It’s an opportunity for our scientists, engineers, and students to make a meaningful contribution to Pakistan’s space future.”

By taking part, participants will not only support the nation’s first astronaut but also help shape the future of space research and innovation in Pakistan.

Chinese doctors have achieved a groundbreaking medical milestone by successfully transplanting a pig liver into a human for the first time. The procedure, performed on a brain-dead patient, offers hope for future life-saving organ donations.

Pigs have emerged as promising organ donors, with several patients in the U.S. already receiving pig kidneys or hearts. However, transplanting livers has proven more challenging. Researchers now aim to use gene-edited pig livers to help critically ill patients awaiting human donors.

Doctors at the Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an, China, conducted the historic surgery on March 10, 2024. They implanted a liver from a genetically modified miniature pig, which had six altered genes to improve compatibility. The procedure lasted ten days before doctors ended the trial at the family’s request, ensuring strict ethical guidelines were followed.

Unlike a full transplant, the patient’s original liver remained intact while the pig liver functioned as a “bridge organ.” This technique could support failing human livers until a suitable donor is found. Over ten days, the liver showed positive signs, including steady blood flow, bile secretion, and albumin production. Lin Wang, one of the lead researchers, described the results as a major achievement for liver transplant science.

Despite the success, scientists emphasize the need for further research. Pig livers perform multiple complex functions, making full transplantation more difficult than heart or kidney procedures. Researchers observed that the pig liver produced lower amounts of bile and albumin compared to human livers. They now plan to extend future trials beyond ten days and eventually test the transplant in a living patient.

Peter Friend, a transplantation expert at Oxford University, praised the study, calling it an impressive step. However, he noted that pig livers cannot yet replace human transplants. Instead, these genetically modified organs could temporarily support patients in liver failure.

China’s researchers have also collaborated with U.S. scientists, learning from previous studies. In 2024, American doctors attached a pig liver to a brain-dead patient, but the organ remained outside the body. While pig heart transplants have shown mixed results, a pig kidney recipient in Alabama, Towana Looney, continues to recover successfully.

As medical science pushes forward, gene-edited pig organs may offer a revolutionary solution to the global organ shortage. While challenges remain, this breakthrough brings new hope for patients awaiting life-saving transplants.

Smart TVs, once just for entertainment, have become powerful data collection tools. Recent reports reveal that these devices, using Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology, track user activity to enhance targeted advertising.

ACR analyzes on-screen content in real-time, creating detailed user profiles. Advertisers then use these profiles to serve personalized ads on TVs and other digital platforms. This shift has changed content consumption, often without users realizing it.

Roku is a key player in this trend. In 2024, it reported $3.5 billion in ad revenue, making up 85% of its earnings. The company has acquired ACR tech firms to improve ad targeting, even earning an Emmy in 2023 for its advancements.

With over 90 million users, Roku has become a data-driven giant, surpassing platforms like Apple TV+. The company collects more than just viewing habits, tracking consumer preferences and behaviors. This shift has transformed it from a hardware seller into a major digital advertising entity.

Other manufacturers are following suit. Samsung, LG, and Vizio have launched dedicated ad divisions—Samsung Ads, LG Ad Solutions, and Vizio Ads. Tech giants like Amazon and Google are also integrating their vast data resources into TV platforms to refine ad targeting.

The market reflects this trend. By the end of 2024, research by Antenna showed that 43% of U.S. streaming subscriptions included ads, marking a shift toward ad-supported content.

Many users remain unaware of how much data their smart TVs collect. During setup, they often agree to ACR tracking without fully understanding its impact. While disabling ACR is possible, it can limit key features, keeping users in the data collection cycle.

As smart TVs evolve, concerns about privacy and consent grow. Users must understand these data practices and adjust their settings accordingly. Governments may also need to step in to ensure transparency and protect consumer rights in the digital age.
