PayPal, an American corporation that operates a worldwide online payment system to provide online payment solutions, will be brought to Pakistan by the new government.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will visit the World Economic Forum’s annual conference in Davos, Switzerland, next week, where he will meet global leaders, energy industry CEOs, and trade delegations. He’ll also meet with PayPal personnel and invite them to come to Pakistan to launch their services.

They further stated that the Ministries of Finance and Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) are researching the project, and that officials from at least one of the ministries will attend the conference. PM Sharif requested a report from the MoITT on IT reforms and the reasons why PayPal has not been brought to Pakistan during today’s Cabinet meeting.

Attempts to bring the global online payment giant to Pakistan were undertaken in 2015 and 2019, but it rejected. PayPal’s main concern in entering the Pakistani market is the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) large list of regulatory constraints and the cumbersome three-step approval process.

According to sources, one of these issues is Pakistan’s inclusion on the FATF grey list. Due to FATF requirements, international electronic payment service providers must adhere to tight client regulations and avoid money laundering, or their licences will be revoked by the SBP.

Countless popular websites, including Reddit, Spotify, Twitch, Stack Overflow, GitHub, gov.uk, Hulu, HBO Max, Quora, PayPal, Vimeo, Shopify, Stripe, as well as media CNN, The Guardian, The New York Times, BBC and the Financial Times is facing interruption.

According to a product manager in the Financial Times, it is believed to be a flaw in the popular CDN provider, Fastly. Fastly has confirmed that its status website is facing outage.

“We are currently investigating the potential impact of our CDN service on performance,” the company said.

Update at 3:50 AM PT: Some websites are slowly recovering. “The problem has been identified and a fix is being implemented,” San Francisco-based Fastly said on its status page.

Update at 4:02 AM PT: The problem seems to have been resolved, and the affected websites and services can now load normally. The company has not communicated the reasons for the interruption.

Generally speaking, it lasted about an hour. The content delivery network (CDN) is a key part of the Internet infrastructure. These companies operate a global server network to improve the performance and availability of Web services.

The CDN acts like a proxy server and caches some data as close as possible to the end-user. For example, media content is usually cached on a CDN server near you, so you don’t have to retrieve it back to the original server every time a user loads a web page.

Although the network is a digital platform, it is very physical in nature. When you load a page on a server on the other side of the world, it takes hundreds of milliseconds to get the page.

Over time, this delay will accumulate and it feels like a slow experience. When the page has been cached, the CDN can usually start serving the page content in less than 25 milliseconds.

Over time, CDNs have added more features, such as load balancing, DDoS protection, web application firewalls, and other security features.

Popular CDNs include Fastly, Cloudflare, CloudFront on Amazon Web Services, and Akamai. Especially Fastly is very popular among media websites. The company went public in 2019.

The stock price of Fastly (NYSE: FSLY) is currently trading at US$48.06, a 5.21% drop from yesterday’s closing price. He quickly referred to it as a “global CDN outage” and appeared to be affecting the company’s global network.

On Internet security vulnerability is a weakness which allows attackers to control the system information. Attackers find the system flaws and take control over the system. Web browsers are only medium for surfing websites and they are essential part of Internet. Generally most of the users visit the websites through Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Recently, A young Pakistani hacker Rafay Baloch found a flaw in world most popular browsers, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Rafay is good bug hunter. He discovered a bug that could allow attackers to use address bar and divert users to the malicious and harmful websites, and can steal the sensitive information of the users.

Google security team also state that “We recognize that the address bar is the only reliable security indicator in modern browsers and if this could be controlled by an attacker it could be harmful.

Also Rafay baloch wrote on his blog (Rafay Hacking Articles), This feature can possibly be exploited by attackers y simply put natural characters like “/” or “!” towards the end of a URL that turn it and gives the false impression that the user is visiting an official site.

For example, a website which has logical order 127.0.0.1/!/http://facebook.com will be displayed as http://facebook.com/!/127.0.0.1. This gives false impression that the user is visiting official Facebook.com while being shown data from 127.0.0.1. “The IP address can be easily hidden in the URL specially on mobile browsers by selecting a long URL in order to make the attack look like realistic and making users fool.

Rafy Baloch wrote, “In order to make the attack more realistic, a Unicode versions of padlock can be used in order to display the presence of SSL.” Further he said, 70% of the direct traffic is affected by this bug which he found in Google chrome and Firefox.

Rafay Baloch living in Karachi and is an Hacker, Researcher and Author. He already discover command execution vulnerabilities on sub domain of PayPal in 2012. And PayPal awarded him $10,000 USD under their Bug Bounty program. Paypal have mentioned Rafay Baloch name on their Honorable Mention page to appreciate all efforts and contributions to Bug Bounty Program.
