Sindh Launches Free Electric Scooters Program Alongside Karachi Transport Expansion
The Sindh government has announced a major initiative to improve public transportation in Karachi, including the introduction of more double-decker and electric buses. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon confirmed the decision during a press conference, highlighting the provincial cabinet’s approval of the new buses.
Public Transport Expansion and Electric Bus Delays
Memon noted that the Sindh cabinet has taken steps to modernize Karachi’s transport network by adding new double-decker and electric buses. However, he pointed out that while the Prime Minister had committed 180 electric buses from the federal government, no funds have been allocated for their procurement yet.
Free Electric Scooters for Women
In an effort to promote women’s mobility and independence, the provincial government has launched a program to distribute free pink electric scooters to women who hold a valid two-wheeler license.
Additionally, a monthly lottery system will provide electric bikes to eligible women, including students and working professionals. For those not yet comfortable with riding a bike, training will be provided by female instructors to ensure safe and confident riding.
To maintain the integrity of the initiative, recipients of the electric bikes will be prohibited from selling them for seven years, ensuring they are used for their intended purpose.
Government’s Commitment to Safety and Design Standards
Memon also addressed concerns over the design of the new buses, stating that both he and the Chief Minister, who are engineers, had initially raised objections. Their concerns were later validated, ensuring that the final bus designs meet proper safety and operational standards.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving urban mobility and supporting women’s empowerment in Sindh. The government’s efforts to enhance public transport and provide sustainable transportation options reflect a commitment to modernizing infrastructure and addressing urban challenges.
